What is the beginning of all things? Do you ever consider the root? Or do you focus on the flower of the plant instead. Many notice the effects but rarely look to the cause of things.
Our thoughts have reasons. Our words have intentions. Our actions have motivations. These are indeed connected to the desires within us. Yes, desire is the beginning of all things.
Desire is a like seed, like a small mustard seed. It finds itself planted in the deepest part of us. It waits to be watered and cared for. Desires grow into something bigger. Sometimes better and sometimes worse. Look to the seed that lays within you. Keep the ones that are worth sprouting and hold value. Discard the seeds that bring destruction later. Those seeds become like weeds. Choking the life within you.
Do you know that the desires we have do not originate from us? A good friend helped me to realize this truth also. That's what good friends do.
Many do not realize this. Therefore, they do not know how to govern the desires within them. Wrong desires remain and they slowly destroy from the inside out. Affecting the things nearby also. It is most necessary to have rule over the desires that come and go from you. With this, I am a work in progress.
Yes, the desires within us are rooted elsewhere. But where?
Origin...
What does God desire? All things that are true, honest, just, pure, and lovely. Whatever is well spoken of, virtuous and worthy of honor. These things describe God, do they not?
Was there an honest thing before God? Did a pure thing exist before him? No, he is the beginning of these things. These things are attributes of him, for they belong to him. They originate with him because they are him. He is the root of all good things.
What are the intentions of the things you speak? Do you intend to speak things that are true and for good purpose? Then the truth that you speak, has its origin or root in God. You speak true things with good purpose, just as he speaks. If so, your words are his words. Your good intentions are his good intentions. What you speak points to God.
What is the motivation of the things you do? Is your deepest motive to behave honest and virtuously? Then what you do, has its origin or root in God. You do as he does. You do as his son did when he was in the body as you are. If so, you behave as he behaved. Your deepest motive is his deepest motive. You are one and the desires you have are one with him. What you do points to God.
He is the object of your desire. The deepest motive and intention of your character. His reason is in you. Take hold of his desire and be moved by it. Be the expression of his desire. Be a reflection of his will. Be the evidence of his existence.
The first man and woman knew only God in the beginning. His desire was their only desire. They had only one desire and it was God. They had one God. They knew no other reason or desire. They had no other motive or intention. Within them was one desire, therefore they needed no choice. Until...
Opposition…
What does the enemy of God desire? Is it not the opposite of God? As dark is opposite to light. Or evil opposes good.
Remember the good things that God desires. Whatever opposes those good things are the desire of his enemy. All that oppose God are his enemy. Do not oppose God.
But there is an opposition to the good desires of God. God's desires move towards him. The opposite desires move from God. Our desires opposite of God, move us from him.
These opposite desires are contrary to God. They claim we have a choice. They bring confusion. They bring bondage. They bring blindness. They bring death.
Are your motivations a reflection of one who opposes God? Do the reasons within you bring and harbor impure thoughts? Does the intention form dishonesty in your words? Does the motive lead you to unjust ways? If so, where do these desires originate? Do you ever wonder about these things? Do you ever ask, so that truth can reveal them to you?
You can see that your ways or your walk is a reflection. What does it reflect? All reflections are an image or likeness or manifestation of a root source. You can tell a tree by its fruit.
Serve...
We are a reflection of the root source that we serve. Like a son reflects his father. Or a daughter reflects a mother. Who is your father? Whose desire is manifested from within you? Whose motive do you keep and follow? Thinking and acting and speaking according to it.
Every moment of your waking life, you serve. Just as surely as the sun appears to serve you light. You are a servant to one or the other. The condition you are currently in is a reflection of your service. God sees it all. The desires you carry within you are moving you one way or the other. Towards God or from him. Ascending or descending.
God sees all of the desires that lead you. Whether to him or from him. If you turn from him, be careful, he may not stop you. If you turn towards him, by his kindness and ability, he will never stop you. In truth, he himself turned you. As a friend, I say do not turn from him.
Study your motives, and examine your true intentions. Reflect upon each thing you think, say and do. Ask, "what is this desire?" What is the root or reason for this very desire?
By this we will become very familiar with the desires within us. We can become an expert in good judgment and discernment. A wise servant knows the root of his desires. He knows which ones belong and which ones must leave him. Serve God only and have the desires within you be pure. God is pure.
As you go…
It is a common message given that our desires are our own. That they originate from us. Yes, they develop within us, but their origin is elsewhere. If desire originated from us, then we could have things that God has not yet known. This cannot be.
No they take form within us by the work of another. God or the opposition of God. They are communicated throughout the world in many ways and many places. Often enticed by the senses and held onto by the heart.
Consider this as you move along your day. Pay attention to the thoughts and words that come and go. The intentions that form within you and the motivations that cause you to act. Ask yourself often "What is the root or beginning of this?". Ask God, "did this begin in you?" "Is your desire?"
Become familiar with God and his good ways. Turn from evil ways and do not look back. Learn from the good teacher of all good things. Take from his perfect ways. Let his desires develop within you. Let his mind be in you.
As the desires within you change, you change. Change for the better. Become better.
